How do I get involved?

We get this question a lot and it’s something that we’ve been trying to get better at answering. Here is the short summary of ways to be involved with Makerfarm

Showing up for volunteer days and events listed in this newsletter
Organizing with a specific project (bikes, gardens, compost, pottery, etc)
Asking to be added to our community Slack
Becoming an “Active Member” of the farm, participating in meetings, and asking to be voted in as a member.

Persistence, patience, and having a specific project or contribution in mind will go a long way to finding a way for your involvement with the Makerfarm.

For example, if you really want to garden at the farm, show up at a potluck and ask who to talk to about our gardening project. Alie, Amos, Danny, Elizabeth, Eva, O’Nell might be there to orient you; show you what areas are open, shared, or managed by a specific person; and coordinate with you about access.

Now that the compost hub is back in full swing we’ll also be having more regular open hours, Wednesdays and Saturdays from 10AM–5PM the gates are open for compost pickups. An Active Makerfarmer will always be present at these time, but be mindful that they are working on their own projects and might not be available to help orient you.

If you are excited about volunteer management, onboarding, and other administrative tasks, we have an Admin Committee that meets monthly on the first Tuesday of the Month. Reply to this email if you are interested to join, we’d love your involvement there too!

Everyone at Makerfarm is a volunteer, which means you have just as much right to use and organize at the space as any of us. Don’t let our uneven volunteer management tell you otherwise, Makerfarm welcomes your creativity, energy, and praxis.

Farmcycles Bike Repair Clinic

Farmcycles returns in August. Have you always wanted to know how to make your squeaks stop squeaking and your rust stop rusting?

Stop by Farmcycles and learn.

We are also once again looking for bike donations, broken bikes welcome as well. We’ll clean them up and make them available to people who need them.

Animal Care Day

Sunday August 17th, 12-2PM

Check out the cool new hay shack!

Come by to meet the Makerfarm ducks, chickens and goats, learn about how our all-volunteer team cares for them, and feed them some discarded produce fom the Alameda Food Bank

Sock Puppet Making Workshop

Wednesday August 27th, 4–6pm

Join artist Krystal Harfert in diving into the playful art of character creation and exploring the first magical steps into puppetry. Whether your puppet is silly, sassy, or a little shy, it will leave with a personality all its own.

This ALL AGES adventure provides everything you need—just bring your curiosity and imagination. Suggested donation is $5, but everyone is welcome, no matter what’s in your pockets.

Come stitch, glue, and giggle your way into a whimsical new friend. Who knows? You might even meet the sock soulmate you never knew you needed!

Paulson Court Free Potluck and Concert

Sunday August 30th, 3-10pm

Come by to share food and community while treating your ears to some excellent local music. Gyselle Ryder, The Soapbox Salute, Pickett Fences, Sakful, Funeral Kings, Year001, The DisRespectors, the Normal Weirs, and more!

Many volunteers have put a lot of time, money, and effort towards cleaning up the old barn and turning it into a magical stage. Help them recoup some of the costs by donating below.
